Gerewol and Ennedi

Please keep in mind this journey is extreme, and it’s recommended only for the adventurous travelers that can resist wild rides. We will be passing through some of the roughest conditions on the continent. Flooding is more than likely. The temperatures will be high. The food is desert food, meaning pasta, couscous, can tuna will be the basics. No showers available, but you might think to bring a portable shower and keep it at your feet throughout the journey. It’s a crazy trip but one that you will never forget. The below itinerary is the best probable scenario. Things may change based on the conditions on the ground. Attending just the Gerewol part is also a possibility.

Day 1: Arrival at N’Djamena airport. Hotel accommodation

Day 2: Departure for the tour by taking the road to Dourbali or that of Guelendeng according to the position of the nomads. We will pass through small villages until the destination of the Fulani. This journey might last 1 or 2 days based on the location of the nomads. Tent accommodation

Day 3 continuing our trip to Gerewol and attend it later in the evening. Tent accommodation

Day 4: We attend the great festival of Gerewol. The Guéréwol festival is celebrated at the end of the rainy season, when the pastures are waterlogged. This extraordinary festival celebrates seduction, beauty and love. This is an opportunity for different peoples, nomads and herders to meet. Men develop an art of beauty, dance, in an attempt to seduce women. We will go from village to village, some Fulani camps will be moving, others already installed for a long time, to attend the festivals. Meeting with the chiefs, the women. These days are informal, because there is time for photos, meetings, sharing meals, milking cows…Slight possibility to leave later that day depending on location and weather conditions. Day 5: Gerewol Departure. Return to N’djamena. Hotel accommodation

Day 6: Departure from N’djamena towards Mongo. From now on until our return to the capital, all nights will be spent in a tent.

Day 7: Mongo, Kalait, Abeche. Tent accommodation

Day 8: Abeche Ennedi. Tent accommodation

Days 10,11,12 and 13: From Kalaït we reach the tourist site of Ennedi starting with Bachikélé the big mountain with its water source, the arch of Julia and then we go to one of the largest natural arches in the world, the Arch of ‘Aloba. We will visit some wonders such as the mountain in the shape of a table, an elephant or a bottle of Champagne. We will also visit the labyrinth of Oyo, the prehistoric rock paintings of Manda Guili and Terkey. We will then go to Guelta d’Archei, the great Guelta of Ennedi with its inexhaustible water source. We will then move on to the labyrinths of Wimina and Abaïké. Tent accommodation

Days 14,15,16 Return from Ennedi to N’Djamena
We return by taking the same road to N’Djamena, making stops to visit cattle water wells, certain mountainous sites, nomadic caravans, the craft market of Abéché, the queen mountain of Guera and the Abou touyour mountain to N’Djamena. Tent accommodation
